‘This program rejuvenates you as a teacher, gives you confidence that you are doing something worthwhile and gives concrete examples of why we teach particular skills.’ 2005 TeachLive Teacher, Broome, WA

What is TeachLive?

TeachLive is an innovative educational tool which places teachers on Earthwatch research projects, where they receive a unique professional development experience and get to teach ‘live’ back to their classrooms via this website.

Students take a virtual expedition with their teachers helping them to engage in science in an Australian context and see their teachers as science role models.

What will teachers learn?

The interactive nature of the program is an excellent opportunity for teachers to improve their web-based teaching skills, learn current scientific research techniques, work in a team with other teachers and learn more about Australia’s unique environment.

“Participation in this project has enabled me to learn invaluable knowledge and skills, giving me a broader background that has direct relevance to my teaching programmes. Experiencing up-to-date research techniques and regional conservation issues has provided me with invaluable understanding and background knowledge that will be used in lessons with my classes and has also been able to be shared with my teaching colleagues.” 2008 TeachLive Teacher, Perth, WA

What do students get out of TeachLive?

TeachLive is a great introduction to the way innovative technologies can motivate students. Students experience what is involved in scientific research increasing their curiosity and enthusiasm for science.

It shows students areas of Australia they may have never seen before, provides them with a new perspective on scientific research and exposes them to positive career opportunities.

“My students gained an improved understanding about an iconic species, awareness of tourism activities in the town and possible career opportunities. They acquired motivation for writing and reading, experienced cross curricular activities and purposeful learning of IT skills. They engaged with the topics related to this project and their work output was increased which shows evidence of quality learning.” 2008 TeachLive Teacher, Exmouth, WA
